PURPOSE We evaluated the effect of warm ischemia time on early postoperative renal function following laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Of 453 patients who were surgically treated for renal tumors between May 2001 and September 2007, and who were identified in our database 128 underwent laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. Of these 128 patients 101 who were evaluable had co...

We examined functional, metabolic, and histological changes in the aortic tissue of rats after the period of warm ischemia ranging from 0 to 24 hours to determine the window of time in which grafts can be optimally viable for harvest. Sixty aortas from Brown Norway rats obtained after warm ischemia were used and changes in contraction, endothelial-dependent or -independent vasodilatation, cell ...

BACKGROUND The safe duration of warm ischemia during partial nephrectomy remains controversial. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to evaluate the short- and long-term renal effects of warm ischemia in patients with a solitary kidney. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Using the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic databases, we identified 362 patients with a solitary kidney who underwent open (n=319) or lap...

INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to emphasize the learning curve of hemifacial transplantation in rats by comparison between 2 operators: medical student trained in basic microsurgery and an experienced microsurgeon. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total number of 15 hemifacial transplants between Brown Norway as donors and Wistar as receiver rats were performed by two operators: experienced mi...

The association between prolonged donor warm ischemia time and poor early graft function has been challenged, but with little evidence. We intend to remove ambiguities and present evidence from the current literature. All donor surgeons must strive to limit warm ischemia to reduce poor early graft function and improve long-term outcomes.

Remote ischemic preconditioning (IP) is a potential renoprotective strategy. However, there has been no demonstrated result in large animals and the role of time window in remote IP remains to be defined. Using a single-kidney porcine model, we evaluated organ protective function of remote IP in renal ischemia reperfusion injury. Fifteen Yorkshire pigs, 20 weeks old and weighing 35-38 kg were u...

In order to examine glucose metabolism in liver grafts during cold preservation (24 and 48 hr), warm ischemia (60 and 120 min), a combination of the two and reperfusion, the amount of protein and mRNA of glucose transporter 2 and the activities of enzymes in glycolysis (glucokinase, phosphofructokinase, pyruvatekinase), gluconeogenesis (glucose 6-phosphatase, fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase), and t...

BACKGROUND Nephron-sparing surgery has become the standard treatment for T1 renal tumors. However, relevant data on the Taiwanese population are lacking, and most of the current literature uses global instead of split renal function (SRF) for postoperative renal function follow-up. We evaluated the postoperative renal function after minimally invasive partial nephrectomy in Taiwanese patients. ...

PURPOSE Renal parenchymal volume decrease after partial nephrectomy is associated with late functional outcomes. We examined the relative effects of resection related and atrophy related volume change on late kidney function. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data were analyzed from a cohort of 187 patients who underwent open, laparoscopic or robotic partial nephrectomy between 2009 and 2011. Total chang...

Background & Target: Ischemia Reperfusion injury is the tissue damage caused when blood supply returns to the tissue after a period of ischemia or lack of oxygen. In this study, the effect of pentoxyfylline on bcl2 gene expression changes and cell injury in kidney of rat following Ischemia Reperfusion were evaluated. Methods: In this experimental study, 20 male wistar rats with average weight of...
